I'm trying to customize the single-post Blog page. I don't want a black background behind the post heading, I'd rather specify an image. I believe the image I'm setting is ending up behind a black background.

In order to customize single post pages you need to edit their template page. You can find this page on All Pages list (should be page named Single post), and in Override Global Settings, check the 'Hide Default Headline' field.
Also, make sure that you have added page's slug to Settings page slug field in Appearance >Customize >Blog.

A huge thank you from BoldThemes in advance!
Yes, that makes the headline go away (I actually kind of liked the headline), but still doesn't give me the ability to insert a header image.
I'm going to proceed without a custom header image.
We are sorry for misunderstanding.
In order for the single posts to have featured image, you should enable default headline on Single Post page (deselect 'Hide Default headline' field in Override Global Settings), and then add image to Featured image field in the post.
